ISLAMABAD, Nov 12: Wafaqi Mohtasib of Pakistan and President of the Asian Ombudsman Association (AOA), Mr. Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, has said that ombudsman institutions across the world play a vital role in promoting and protecting human rights, civil liberties, good governance, and the rule of law.
He made these remarks while addressing the International Conference on Constitution and the Rule of Law in Contemporary Legal Systems, held as part of the ‘Year of Constitution and Sovereignty’ celebrations in the Republic of Azerbaijan, according to a press release.
Mr. Qureshi emphasized that the core aim of ombudsmanship is to make state institutions more efficient, transparent, and responsive, ultimately enhancing service delivery in accordance with national laws. He described ombudsman offices as enablers of accountability, equality, and fair practices, serving as a bridge between citizens and the state.
Highlighting the rule of law as the backbone of good governance, Mr. Qureshi said that in any democratic system, the well-being of the people must remain the top priority.
He extended warm congratulations to the government and people of Azerbaijan on the 30th anniversary of their Constitution and the 5th anniversary of the restoration of sovereignty, calling both occasions major milestones in the country’s history.
Noting the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, he expressed confidence that relations between the two nations—and their respective ombudsman institutions—would continue to strengthen through mutual efforts in promoting justice, inclusivity, and democratic values.
The conference was attended by the Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan and heads of various ombudsman and judicial bodies from across the Asian region.
