Rawalpindi: Punjab Ombudsperson Dr. Najma Afzal Khan has said that incidents involving the exploitation and harassment of women have declined significantly due to active enforcement measures by her institution.
Speaking at a press conference in Rawalpindi, Dr. Najma said the Office of the Ombudsperson was working to ensure that women are able to perform their duties in safe, respectful, and supportive environments. She said immediate relief was being provided to complainants, while strict action was being taken against those found guilty.
She informed that out of 1,400 cases received by the institution, 1,305 had been decided, with penalties imposed in cases where allegations were proven. She added that the enforcement of workplace codes of conduct and the establishment of inquiry committees were being ensured in institutions where women are employed.
Dr. Najma said harassment committees are being formed in every institution, each comprising three members, and training is also being provided to committee members for effective handling of complaints. She further stated that the display of the Code of Conduct at workplaces is mandatory, and the Ombudsperson’s office monitors compliance across the province.
She noted that both women and men can approach the institution in harassment-related matters. She also appreciated the cooperation of government departments, saying it had helped provide prompt relief to complainants.
Describing harassment as a global issue, Dr. Najma emphasized the need for continued prevention, awareness, and institutional accountability. She said the active role of the Ombudsperson’s office had contributed to a significant reduction in such incidents and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to protecting women’s rights in line with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision.
