Islamabad, April 16, 2026: Federal Ombudsman (Wafaqi Mohtasib) Mr. Naveed Kamran Baloch has underscored the vital role of ombudsman institutions worldwide in providing free and expeditious grievance redressal while promoting good governance, rule of law, and efficient public administration.
He expressed these views while inaugurating an online meeting held at the Wafaqi Mohtasib Secretariat to mark the 30th anniversary of the Asian Ombudsman Association (AOA), in his capacity as President of the Association. Representatives from member countries, including Azerbaijan, Türkiye, China, Thailand, and Uzbekistan, participated virtually and shared special messages on the occasion.
Mr. Baloch noted that ombudsman institutions have the potential to transform the lives of millions, particularly in developing countries, by ensuring accessible and effective justice. Reflecting on the journey of the AOA, he remarked that what began as a modest initiative three decades ago has evolved into a dynamic 47-member organization representing nearly two-thirds of the world’s population.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, he emphasized the need to institutionalize the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and best practices among member states to foster transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency in public administration. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued commitment to the objectives and principles of the Association.
The Federal Ombudsman also pointed out that the international stature of the AOA is reflected in its recognition under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 79/177, which acknowledges it among active regional ombudsman bodies. He further noted the alignment between the goals of ombudsman institutions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demonstrating a shared commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.
Recalling the origins of the Association, Mr. Baloch stated that Pakistan, along with other like-minded countries, played a pioneering role in its establishment following the First Asian Ombudsman Conference held in Islamabad on April 15–16, 1996. Today, Pakistan holds the presidency of the AOA, and its Secretariat is based at the Wafaqi Mohtasib Office in Islamabad.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment among member countries to strengthen cooperation and advance the mission of ensuring justice, accountability, and good governance across the region.
