Balochistan Ombudsman Nazar Baloch has expressed grave concern over the deplorable state of basic facilities in prisons across the province, emphasizing the urgent need for meaningful reforms. Speaking on the matter, he underscored that despite government claims and substantial funds allocated over the years, the condition of prisons remains far from satisfactory.
Nazar Baloch highlighted the critical lack of essential amenities such as proper medical care, sanitation, and adequate food for inmates. He stated that reports received by his office point to systemic neglect and a failure to utilize funds transparently, which has exacerbated the hardships faced by prisoners.
“The claims of prison reforms have largely remained on paper, while inmates continue to suffer due to insufficient facilities. It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to address these issues and ensure a humane environment within prisons,” Nazar Baloch remarked.
He called on relevant authorities to prioritize prison reforms, improve oversight mechanisms, and ensure that funds allocated for prisons are utilized efficiently and transparently. Nazar Baloch further stressed the importance of adhering to international standards of prisoner welfare and upholding the dignity and rights of all individuals, even those serving sentences.
