ISLAMABAD: The Wafaqi Mohtasib Secretariat intervened to secure the release of five prisoners who had remained behind bars despite completing their respective terms of imprisonment due to non-payment of minor fines.
According to a press release, the intervention was made by Mr. Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, Wafaqi Mohtasib, after it was brought to his notice that the prisoners were unable to arrange small amounts required for their release.
The development followed a generous contribution by a resident of Sector G-14/3, Islamabad, Chaudhry Muhammad Din Shauq, who met the Wafaqi Mohtasib and donated Rs 100,000 for the welfare of such prisoners. Appreciating the noble gesture, the Wafaqi Mohtasib directed the Registrar of his office to forward the cheque to the Superintendent of Central Jail Rawalpindi and to pursue the matter with jail authorities.
The cross cheque was promptly sent to the Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) of the jail, who acknowledged its receipt and confirmed that necessary steps were being taken. Subsequently, the Superintendent of the jail conveyed his gratitude to the Wafaqi Mohtasib, informing him that five prisoners Naeem son of Moza, Liaqat son of Raqeeb, Sadaqat son of Wazeer, Nawab son of Abdul Ghani, and Zain son of Ikram had been released after adjustment of their fines.
It was noted that many prisoners across the country continue to languish in jails for non-payment of petty fines even after completing their sentences, a situation that has assumed serious proportions in recent times.
The Wafaqi Mohtasib’s Office has initiated several measures for the welfare of prisoners, particularly women and juveniles. He expressed hope that other members of society would follow the example set by Chaudhry Muhammad Din Shauq and contribute toward alleviating the hardships of deserving prisoners.
