KARACHI: The Banking Mohtasib of Pakistan has emphasized the need for financial institutions to move beyond superficial claims of “corporate culture” and instead embed meaningful values into the fabric of their organizations beginning at the top.

Speaking on the importance of genuine organisational integrity, the Banking Ombudsman highlighted that while every corporate entity claims a “unique work culture,” the language used to promote these identities often lacks originality and substance, recycling the same vague slogans without real commitment to ethical practice.

“The tone of any organisation’s culture is set at the top from the Board of Directors down to senior management,” the Ombudsman noted. “Vision and mission statements must reflect the core purpose of the institution, but values only gain credibility when they are consistently translated into behaviour.”

He added that in the banking sector, where trust and transparency are non-negotiable, tokenism in corporate values can rapidly erode public confidence. The Ombudsman stressed that value statements must be lived, not just displayed, and that senior leadership must model the conduct they expect from their teams.

The remarks serve as a call to action for banks and financial institutions to critically assess whether their internal culture genuinely aligns with their stated principles and whether customers and employees can see those values in daily practice.
