ISLAMABAD, Oct 8: Mr. Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi, the Wafaqi Mohtasib, emphasized that adherence to the rule of law is the cornerstone of good governance, fair play, and inclusivity. He made these remarks while addressing an international conference held as part of the Asian Regional Meeting 2025 of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) in Islamabad.

The conference, hosted by Ms. Ayesha Hamid, Provincial Ombudsman Punjab and Second Vice President of IOI, brought together delegates from various countries including Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Macao-China, Philippines, and Timor Leste, along with heads of ombudsman institutions from across Pakistan.
Mr. Qureshi highlighted that ombudsman institutions serve to enhance the performance of state agencies by promoting efficiency, fairness, and public accountability. He stated that these institutions are essential enablers of justice, equality, and inclusivity.
Referring to the role of the Wafaqi Mohtasib, Mr. Qureshi said it aligns with UN General Assembly resolutions that call for independent and autonomous ombudsman bodies capable of upholding human rights and reinforcing the rule of law. He noted that suo moto actions taken by the Wafaqi Mohtasib on issues of mismanagement have led to tangible improvements in government performance.
He also pointed to initiatives such as Khuli Katcheries in remote areas and inspection visits to frequently complained-about departments as effective tools for promoting transparency and strengthening the rule of law.
Other key speakers at the conference included Ms. Ayesha Hamid, the Federal Insurance Ombudsman, the Federal Tax Ombudsman, and the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace.
