KARACHI, Sep, 2025 – The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the Sindh governor to decide within the legally prescribed timeframe an appeal filed by K-Electric Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Monis Alvi, challenging the provincial ombudsman’s order for his dismissal in a workplace harassment case.
On July 31, the provincial ombudsman for protection against harassment of women at the workplace ordered Alvi’s removal and directed him to pay Rs. 2.5 million in compensation to the complainant, a former chief marketing and communication officer of the company.
The next day, Alvi approached the SHC, which suspended the ombudsman’s order. At Friday’s hearing, the complainant’s counsel argued that Alvi’s petition before the high court was not maintainable as his appeal was already pending before the Sindh governor. “If the petitioner wishes to pursue his case in the high court, he should first withdraw his appeal pending before the governor,” the counsel submitted.
Alvi’s lawyer countered that the complainant had herself sought adjournments before the governor and argued that the ombudsman lacked jurisdiction over K-Electric, a trans-provincial entity. He stressed that under the law, the governor must decide appeals within 90 days.
Justice Iqbal Kalhoro observed that the court could direct the governor to decide the matter within the prescribed timeframe. The bench extended its interim order suspending the ombudsman’s decision until the next hearing and adjourned the case for four weeks
