ISLAMABAD : Wafaqi Mohtasib Ejaz Ahmad Qureshi has expressed serious concern over the failure of authorities to submit a satisfactory report regarding the checking of vehicles for environmental compliance in Islamabad’s Red Zone.
The Mohtasib has summoned the SSP (Traffic), DC (ICT), and DG (Environment) on September 4, 2025, after the initial report presented at the August 29 hearing was found inadequate and lacking critical details.
Earlier, the Ombudsman had taken suo motu notice of long vehicle queues and severe congestion in the Red Zone caused by ongoing checks. Citizens reported prolonged waits and inconvenience, raising questions about the planning and execution of the exercise.
The Mohtasib highlighted that the report failed to address key questions, including:
- Why a sensitive area like the Red Zone was chosen for the inspection.
- Whether any awareness campaign preceded the initiative.
- The specific makes and models of vehicles under examination.
- Whether separate counters were set up for women and senior citizens.
According to the Ombudsman’s office, many citizens waited in queues only to be informed later that, in the first phase, only vehicles manufactured up to 2015 were being checked.
The Wafaqi Mohtasib reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring public convenience, transparency, and accountability, directing the officials to provide a comprehensive response at the upcoming hearing.
